XL: “As early as age 10, XL (a.k.a. Khristaan Hillard) was captured by the deep grooves and beats of the underground. Listening to the Hott Mixx 5 from his bedroom on the South Side of Chicago, he would practice his dance moves and feel the music in his soul. As the House Music movement grew, so did XL. By the age of 16, he was sneaking into the music box to watch early legends like Farley Jackmaster Funk tear up the party. This fueled an uncontrollable passion within him to take to the decks himself. In addition to various DJ’s that inspired him, XL also attributes other musical styles like R&B, Jazz, and Gospel

“House Music first touched me through the Spirit of Dance. It was through the spirit and the vibe that made you feel like no matter what was happening in your life you always felt like you were a part of something special. That’s what influenced me to go deeper into the Movement, not just through dance, but also by playing the music; expressing back the love that was given to me through the sounds of House Music. Musically my life was affected many ways through artists such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Prince and Roy Ayers. I also have been inspired by turn table legends Gene Hunt (Gene, by the way, is responsible for my first major gig), Mark Grant, Dimitri From Paris and Malcolm Charles. I have been ‘in this’ for almost 20 years now and over that time have been touched by many beautiful things, beautiful people and beautiful music, and by this feel truly blessed. I hope in the next 20 years I can give back all that House Music has given me.”

This month we feature one of Greensboro’s finest on the turntables! Known for her music selection and skills, she has made a name for herself in the House music community. Her show can be heard every Saturday night on House90.1FM! Come show your support for Greensboro’s own DJ REAL!

DJ REAL:

Born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, Tomietta Brown initially developed an interest in DJing when attending gym jams in the early eighties at Dudley High School. From that point forward, she connected with “J-Mixx,” a local DJ who began mentoring her.

They later reconnected in the early nineties and she was asked to join the radio show, the Massive House Mix on 90.1 FM as a radio personality. During this time, she began promoting parties and developing her craft.

As the years passed, her pure love for music of all types has grown into the DJ Service Various Rhythms. Since creating her own professional DJ Service, she has been widely sought after to provide music for all audiences to savor. While her musical influences are many, Various Rhythms is strictly committed to playing the best in R&B, Hip-Hop, House, Old School, Reggae, Go-Go, Pop-Rock, Gospel, and Jazz music.

Starting June 2nd 2012 and continuing on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of June, July and August, VWE Music will present ‘Electric Summer’, a daytime, rooftop, season-long showcase of Electronic Dance Music in the Triad.

This event series will take place on the rooftop of Greene Street Club (113 N. Greene Street, Greensboro, NC). Each event will kick off at 1pm and will conclude at 6pm.

The atmosphere for ‘Electric Summer’ will take on that of an EDM festival, such as Winter Music Conference, held annually in South Beach. With a number of splash pools, reasonably priced drinks, VIP offerings, and a sundeck in addition to music showcasing some of the region’s most talented EDM DJs, artists and producers this event will be the place to be and be seen for the Triad’s 2012 summer calendar.

Each ‘Electric Summer’ event is scheduled to have a headlining DJ act in addition to the local and regional talents.

The ‘Electric Summer’ event series, taking place on Saturday afternoons, provides music fans, sun lovers and socialites alike an opportunity to experience something never done before in the Triad.

This will be an 18 and up event.

If you close your eyes, open your ears, open your mind, and let your body flow, you will find yourself in a new plane previously unexplored. Seamlessly blended tracks vibrate your spine while soothing your soul. Many people refer to the genre as house, but Julius the Mad Thinker makes it home. Approaching each endeavor with heart, soul and passion, Julius builds you up gradually through loops of energy bursts and just when you reach your climax, he drops you back to a lounge state awaiting the next climb to the peak.

With Julius the Mad Thinker, you must “Witness the Dynamic” . . .
This illustrious dynamic was first identified by the founder of Large Music, Jeff Craven, when he invited Julius to open and close the first annual Get Large party at the Winter Music Conference. From there, John Davis, a top NYC promoter and co-founder of Body&SOUL, witnessed the dynamic when he came upon Julius and installed him as a resident of Sunday Sessions in NYC. Chicago house pioneer Chip E, witnessed the dynamic when he invited Julius to be interviewed for house music documentary, the Unusual Suspects, to which Julius was the youngest interviewee to appear. And NYC’s Undaground Archives Choice Award gave tribute to the dynamic when Julius was awarded the “Best Emerging Talent” recognition.
First exposed to dance music in the sixth grade, Julius went on to become a DJ and producer in 1994. Since that time, Julius has developed a charisma behind the turntables that can only be described as a dynamic that fills the room. Coupled with “the Mad Thinker” title, which was given to him by MC Miles Bentley of Rec Center, Julius makes no move as an artist haphazardly. Be it the tracks he plays, the order in which he plays them or the EQing which brings out a melody or rhythm in a whole new way – all these elements which comprise his dynamic are meticulously plotted throughout his improvisational creative process.

As the co-founder and partner of the internationally renowned promotional and DJ collective, 3Degrees Global, and a resident of the 3Degrees “Some Call It House . . . We Call It Home” tour, the dynamic has been witnessed throughout the most notorious clubs of house music’s homeland in Chicago, including Smartbar, Soundbar, Sonotheque, Ohm, The Note and Zentra. Across the nation the dynamic has been witnessed on the main stage at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Marques Wyatt’s DEEP event in LA, Soul Revival in Boston, Devotion at The End Up & Pink in San Francisco, Club Five in Washington DC, Pearl at Nikki Beach in Miami, Kevin Hedge and Louie Vega’s Roots at Cielo in New York as well as stops in Hawaii, Canada, Mexico and France. In addition the dynamic has cross pollinated with house legends via Julius DJing alongside Frankie Knuckles, Joe Claussell, Farley ”Jackmaster” Funk, Lil’ Louis, Derrick Carter, Louie Vega, Derrick May and Ron Trent amongst others.

As he continues to manifest this vision in music, Julius says, “My purpose in this journey of music and life is to help others get to places that they never imagined possible, and as a DJ, I’m here to live that message as an example.”

Dick Tracey

Joel Tracey, aka “Dick Tracey” aka “The Capt’n”, got his start behind the decks in 1998, playing around with a friend’s tables and old jump-up records in Washington State, where he lived while serving in the U.S. Army. Since then, he has made a name for himself in the Carolinas as one of the most fun and diverse dj’s around, playing a great blend of trend-forward edm while keeping the dancefloor in mind. Although Tracey has played a wide selection of sounds throughout the years, he has most recently carved his niche in the Charlotte scene by playing a unique mix of nu disco and groovy house. You can catch Tracey at one of his residencies at Soul Gastrolounge in the hip Plaza Midwood area, and downtown at Phoenix, where he plays several times a month at their “ID Saturdays” events, as well as throughout the Carolinas.
